According to a new documentary film, American Artifact, the history of rock posters is a long, fascinating one. The film, directed by Merle Becker, will be showing at The Clinton Street Theater, from January 22-29.

Becker, a former producer with the MTV network, first became interested in telling the story of rock posters after coming across a book called, The Art of Modern Rock. "I thought that rock posters were a thing of the past, but after seeing this book, I realized they were still being created today. Plus the art was really beautiful," said Becker.

Becker is a self-admitted "obsessive music fan", and undoubtably, her previous experience working as a producer with such MTV staples as Beavis and Butthead and Daria prepared her for the long road ahead in making this film.

"I started the film in 2004 and all told it took four years to create - one year of pre-production, two years of shooting, and one year of editing", stated Becker.

Becker was quick to point out the Portland connection to her film. "Two of the most sought after rock poster designers, Emek and Justin Hanson, are Portland residents." And Becker says that Hanson may even attend the opening night on the 22nd, with a possible Q & A to follow the screening.
