Benson High teacher changes plea to guilty in meth case

PORTLAND, Ore. - A Benson High School teacher accused of dealing meth on the side changed her plea to guilty on Friday and was sentenced to 45 days in jail.

A second count of possession against Zuleyma Figueroa, a Spanish teacher at the high school, was dismissed in the case.

Figueroa was arrested late last year after investigators used confidential informants to buy meth from her and a co-defendant multiple times over a six-month period. Documents in the case indicated she and her roommate sold drugs out of a home they shared in southeast Portland.

When Figueroa was arrested, students at Benson High School were shocked to learn what the popular teacher was accused of doing in her spare time. Figueroa had been teaching at the school for eight years and even filled in as an administrator from time to time.

Principal Steve Olczak said at the time of Figueroa's arrest that there was no evidence to suggest she sold meth to students or committed any crimes on campus.

Sellwood crime spree puts business owners on alert

SELLWOOD, Ore. - Business owners in Sellwood are on alert again this weekend, after a string of break-ins targeting as many as 13 shops so far this year.

A member of the local Neighbor Business Alliance tells us at first the burglars were after the obvious: cash and computers. Now shops are losing merchandise that ranges from being very expensive to not worth much at all.

Musiqal PDX at 7908 Southeast 13th Avenue seems to be the most recent victim. Last week someone broke the front window out, after first trying to pry their way through the front door with a crowbar.

The owner of Musiqal PDX said that, even with an alarm system, whomever broke in was able to steal six guitars in a matter of seconds. The guitars ranged from low-end models to a $4,000 classic guitar.

Business owners such as Brent Heeb, who owns Stars Antiques Malls which also has been hit, worry businesses will continue to be violated until someone catches the person or people in the act.

"I think we're all at risk," Heeb said.

Just trying to rob a bank can land you in big trouble

PORTLAND, Ore. - A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an attempted robbery at a local Wells Fargo bank branch.

According to the FBI, attempting to rob a bank carries the same charge as actually robbing one.

A 911 call from the bank led police to Marlin, who was found sitting next to a building nearby. He matched the description of a man who walked into the bank, demanded cash and left when he was unsuccessful. The bank has protective glass walls that protect the employees from robbers. Witnesses said the man implied that he had a weapon but no weapon was seen.
