3-year-old gets separated from dad at MAX platform

A 3-year-old boy was left stranded at a MAX platform when a door on the train malfunctioned, separating the toddler from his dad.

The incident happened Monday, Nov. 16 at the S.E. Main Street Station.

According to TriMet, as the boy was getting off the train, he pushed the accessible ramp button on the door, causing it to open and then close again to deploy the ramp. TriMet officials say the door should have reopened but it didn't and the father and son were separated. They are investigating, saying the ramp deployment process may have been overridden by the operator, causing it to be interrupted.

“He (the operator) may have said, ‘Mmm, don’t know that’s needed and may have just stopped that whole process,” says TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch.

Accomplices in Belmont Market shooting plead guilty

Two accomplices in the shooting of a southeast Portland convenience store clerk pleaded guilty this week to felony murder charges.

The clerk, Chester Yeom (pictured below), was shot in March 2007 at Belmont Market, located at Southeast 34th Avenue and Belmont Street.

The shooting left Yeom paralyzed and almost totally disabled. He spent weeks in a coma and on life support before he regained consciousness and was moved to a nursing facility.  However, he later died of an infection.

The shooter, Jimmy Kashi, was convicted of attempted aggravated murder before Yeom's death and sentenced to 35 years. But he is now being charged with murder and will appear before a judge next month.

A woman who was standing on the platform tried to get the door to open, but couldn't and the train took off. She ended up staying with the boy until his father returned seven minutes later from a returning train.

High School Blitz 'Game to Watch'

Every week, KATU Sports Photographer Mike Rosborough spotlights local high school football games in his 'Mike's Games to Watch.' And you can catch highlights from the games on our High School Blitz show Fridays at 11:35 p.m. (right after KATU News).

Here is one of this week's games to watch...

Grant and Central Catholic are making it a habit to meet in this round and offer an intriguing contest… the Generals bring great athleticism and my player of the year in Ken Acker against the Rams, who have improved with every game, have an impact player of their own in Brendan Scarlett and a physical defense that may have to shut down Grant to advance…. Great game to take in at Lincoln HS….

For more games to watch this week...

Free dental clinic for kids slated to close in March

The only free dental clinic for many local kids will close in March if it can't find another source of funding.

Kids getting free or reduced lunch at Portland Public Schools are eligible for free dental care at the Children's Dental Clinic but the Assistance League of Portland can't afford to keep the clinic open (it costs about $250,000 a year to operate).

That puts lots of kids at risk for a lifetime of dental problems.

The clinic has approached the Multnomah Dental Society, the Boys and Girls Club of Portland and others for help to keep the clinic open past March.
